I discussed each and every detail of how to join the Indian Navy in Officers Cadre in my earlier blog and in this blog I am going to explain every process you need to adopt in making your carrier in the Indian Navy as a Sailor and explore High Seas. Let’s start
Sailors in the Indian Navy is like the backbone of the Organisation and main propeller behind the smooth functioning of Force. He is the one responsible for efficient functioning, handling, maintenance of the assets acquired by the Organisation. He is part of the main workforce and constitutes around 90% of the force. Sailors in Indian Navy are recruited in different domains which are classified depending on the Qualification, Job specification and works going to be handled by them in force.

⇛⇛ Artificer Apprentice

This is a mode of Technical entry in Sailor cadre and it throws a  great career ahead for you. Being an Artificer you will be posted in the middle level of management where you will be looking after man management and Supervision of the Maintenance and repair activities onboard ships/ Establishments. You are supposed to have a thorough knowledge of the sophisticated system installed onboard and about their repair as well. In this entry, you will be going to hold a very responsible position and work as a link between Officers and men under your command.
Training: Selected candidates after the written test and all other formalities will be called at INS Chilka for 2 months of basic training. After completion of the basic training you will be sent for Various Professional training depending on the Branch/ Trade you are going to be allotted at INS Chilka itself. Generally, AA candidates are allotted Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics Branch depending on the marks in the written exam at Chilka.
Mechanical candidates will proceed to INS Shivaji near Lonavala in Maharashtra for Professional training while Electrical and Electronics candidates join INS Valsura in Jamnagar Gujarat. Further candidates are subdivided into the Aviation branch of Navy after completion of their Diploma in these Institutions. Candidates allotted in Aviation arm go to the Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology at Kochi for Aviation related teachings.


Qualification for AA: 10+2 examination with 60% or more marks in aggregate with Maths & Physics and at least one of these subjects; Chemistry/Biology/Computer science from an Educational board recognized by Central/State Government.


Age Limit to enter: The age for Artificer Apprentice candidate should be between 17-20 years on the day of enrolment.

⇛⇛ Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR)

Recruitment as SSR is the second way where you can land in the Indian Navy. After selection through written exams and all other related formalities, candidates are called for Basic Training for 6 months at INS Chilka. Sailor through this entry are the main ingredients in the workforce and works at the lower level with responsibility on shoulders to maintain the Ship in the ready state all time.
Training: Selected candidates are directed to report at INS Chilka for 22 weeks of basic training followed by Branch/Trade allotment based on the marks obtained in basic training. Candidates are allotted with Signal/ Navigation and Direction/ Aviation/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics and many more branches and proceeds for the professional training for a duration of another 22 weeks.
Mechanical candidates will proceed to INS Shivaji near Lonavala in Maharashtra for Professional training while Electrical and Electronics candidates join INS Valsura in Jamnagar Gujarat. Candidates allotted with the Aviation branch of Navy go to the Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology at Kochi for Aviation related teachings. While the other candidates go to respective schools in Kochi.

⇛⇛ Matric Recruit:

Candidates are selected after Matriculation examination and age criteria remain the same as in the other two entries. Candidates are divided into various branches like:


Chef: Responsible for cooking the food for manpower in force as per Menu including Non-Vegetarian dishes as well. Also, they are trained in firearms for the efficient functioning of the organization in event need arises.


Steward Tasked to serve food in the officer's mess, as waiters, housekeeping, accounting of funds, wine and stores, preparation of the menu, etc. Also, they are trained in firearms for the efficient functioning of the organization in event need arises.


Sanitary Hygienist They are tasked with a job to maintain hygiene in wash-rooms and other areas.  Also, they are trained in firearms for the efficient functioning of the organization in event need arises.


Musicians required to play musical instruments as a part of the naval band during ceremonial parades and other official functions.


Training of Matric Recruits:
Selected candidates undergo 14 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by Professional training at INS Kunjali/Mumbai.

Notifications to join as Sailor: Notification for entry into Sailor cadre is published in all leading newspapers of the country especially in Employment News twice a year that is in Jan/Feb and July/Aug.
