If you are Graduate and want to make a career in the Armed Forces, then apart from Defence Forces (Army, Airforce, Navy) you have another option available at your disposal by which you can serve the nation with Integrity and Passion, and the option I am talking about is UPSC CAPF exam by which candidates are appointed as Assistant Commandant in various CAPFs. CAPF(Central Armed Police Force) exam is conducted by UPSC once in a year. Assistant Commandant rank is the very first rank in Officer cadre in CAPF which is generally taken as an equivalent to Dy SP in state police forces. It is a group A service in which you will get a reputed Officer class job with the pride of serving the nation being a part of Armed Forces.

CAPF is a combination of a total of five forces including :
CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force)
BSF (Border Security Force)
CISF (Central Industrial Security Force)
ITBP (Indo Tibet Border Police)
SSB (Sashtra Seema Bal)
I will give brief details about each force respectively and then will discuss the Entry procedure into the Rank


CRPF is the world's largest armed police force and was raised in 1939 as Royal Crown Representative Police. Force is tasked to tackle all the Internal Security problems in the nation. It is mandated to assist State Police forces in even of distress when asked for by the concerned department or when Centre thinks the prevailing condition is out of control from State Authorities.
CRPF has its two specialized wings namely RAF (Rapid Action Force) & COBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action.RAF is specialized in Riot Control, while COBRA is raised to encounter the Naxalites in LWE areas by carrying out Intelligence-based Operations.

BSF is the world's largest border guarding force and was raised in 1965. It is mandated to guard the Nation's Border with Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is usually deployed in the forefront at Border in peacetime and will be tasked to assist Indian Army in Wartime.

CISF raised in 1969 and it is specialized in protecting vital assets of the country like Airports, Metro stations, Nuclear Stations, PSUs and at present also providing security cover to India's reputed organization like Infosys. CISF is equipped with advanced technology to cover their domain and proved itself extremely efficient in the job assigned to them.

ITBP is force specialized in operating over Snow covered Himalayan Heights. It was raised in 1962 with the aim to protect Indian Border with China and Tibet. It is a specialized Mountain force well capable to tackle any threat in its area.

SSB is the youngest Border guarding force of India and was raised in 1963 after China's aggression in 1962. It is mandated to provide Border protection at India Nepal Border.

Along with these five forces, a specialized force called NDRF is raised which is mandated to reach out to the public in natural disaster and calamity, and personnel from all these five CAPF are deputed to NDRF.


The appointment to the rank of Assistant Commandant is conducted by UPSC on the basis of exam conducted by prestigious UPSC once in a year and the Officers appointed to the forces through UPSC are called as Directly Appointed Gazetted Officers (DAGO). Each and every detail regarding the UPSC CAPF exam is discussed in this blog.
Age criteria The maximum age for a candidate to apply for the exam is calculated until the exam date announced by UPSC. so the candidate must be within prescribed age limit as on exam date:
General-  maximum of 25 years
BC/OBC - maximum of 28 years
SC/ST - maximum of 30 years
Central Govt Employee - maximum of 5 years
Ex-Serviceman - Maximum age relaxation for 05 years provided candidate falls in Ex-Serviceman rules. 


Notification Usually UPSC publishes its exam calendar prior online on its site and from there you can check the dates of notification to be announced by UPSC. Generally in the month of March/ April Notification comes and one month is given to apply for. The process of filling the form is purely online and rest all details must be corroborated with the notification available on the official website.

Examination UPSC conducts Examination for CAPF in offline mode and at selected centers across India. Admit card for the exam can be downloaded from the official UPSC website 3 weeks prior to the written exam. The examination consists of a Written Exam (Paper I + Paper II), followed by the Physical and Medical Board. Candidates who all are got cleared their Physical will be produced in front of the Medical Board. After this successful candidates will be called for interview at UPSC and the final result will be based on the aggregate marks obtained in all stages of examination. Medical Board does not have any marks associated with it.

Examination Fees is 200/- for all candidates except SC/ST who are exempted from fees. Fees can be paid online via available mode in the website.

Syllabus of written exam
Paper I (General Ability + Intelligence) is of 250 marks and syllabus for the paper is as follows:
General Ability Part: Analogies, Arrangements, Problem Solving, Syllogisms, Spatial Orientation, Space Visualization, Analysis, Ranking, Arithmetical Reasoning, Decision Making, Visual Memory, Arithmetic Number Series, Figural Classification, Coding and Decoding, Relationship Concepts, Statement Conclusion etc.
Intelligence Part:  General Mental Ability, General Science, Current Events of National and International Importance, Indian Polity and Economy, History of India, Indian and World Geography.


Paper-II (English Language and Comprehension and Essay) is of 200 marks. Syllabus for the same is as follows:
Essay Part: Essay Writing, Comprehension, Precis Writing, Counter Argument, Communications, Report Writing, Language Skills, Grammar, Vocabulary, etc.
General Studies Part: History India, Current Events – National and International, Indian National Movement, Geography – India, About India, Eminent Personalities, Cultural Heritage, Environment, Economy, General Polity, General Science, Indian Constitution, Science, and Technology, etc.
Interview at UPSC house is of 150 marks, so  total marks to compete for is 250+200+160=600


Physical Efficiency Test and Medical Examination
After clearing the written exam part of the CAPF exam, successful candidates need to submit a DAF (Detailed Application Form) online to UPSC at www.upsc.gov.in and also had to keep a printout of the same. This printout of DAF is required to be handed over to the board of Officers present to conduct Physical Tests. The physical test will be conducted by a board of officers nominated among all five CAPFs usually headed by Senior Officer of the rank of Commandant. Physical and Medical exam duration if of 2-3 days at selected locations. Physical Efficiency Test is of Qualifying nature that means candidates have to just pass the required events and it carries no marks in it.
The physical test part has 04 events that every candidate has to clear and no relaxation is given to any candidate on any basis, so better go with full preparedness. Events to be conducted during the PET are:
100 Meters race Time to complete the race is 16 seconds for Male candidates and 18 seconds for Female candidates.
800 Meters race Time to complete the race is 3 minutes 45 seconds for Male candidates and 4 minutes 45 seconds for Female candidates.
Long Jump Candidate has to jump and a maximum of 03 chances are given to each candidate. Length to be jumped is 3.5 Meters for Male candidates and 3.0 meters for Female candidates.
Shot Put which has a weight of 7.26 Kgs and needs to be thrown up to 4.5 Meters and it is only for Male candidate.
Medical Tests will be a candidate only of those candidates who are declared Fit in the physical test.

Centers for PET & Medical Test: Physical and Medical test for CAPF is conducted only in selected centers of the forces across the country and the list of them are as follows:

The location of centers where your PET and Medical Test to be conducted depends upon where the candidate has given his written test. Suppose you gave written in Mumbai then your PET will be in CRPF camp Talegaon near Pune only.
Re medical Candidates who are declared ‘Temporary Unfit’ can claim a chance to be medically tested again by the board of Medical Officers after some time of Medical test but before the Interview start date. Re Medical will be conducted only at Delhi for each candidate


Note: Pregnancy during Physical Test is Disqualification for female candidates so it must be avoided.


Candidates who are qualified in the Written and Physical + Medical part will be called for interview at UPSC house at New Delhi. Final merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained by the candidate in all domain (Written + Physical + Interview), and the list is usually announced after 15 to 20 days of last candidate's interview at UPSC House.
Force allocation in respect of each candidate among all five forces will be done on the basis of the Force preferences given by the candidate in DAF (Detailed Application Form) filled after the result of the written exam online through UPSC site and position of the candidate in final merit list keeping vacancies in each force in mind.


Training Academies: Basic Training of Assistant Commandant at Academies is of 52 weeks excluding 02 weeks of Mid Term break. Academies for the training of Officers in respective forces are located in various parts of the Nation which are listed as:
