You can join Indian Navy in two formats: one as an Officer and other as a Sailor. Here I will tell each and every detail about how to join Indian as an Officer. I will be discussing how to join as a Sailor in the next blog. Officers are mainly responsible for Management and Administration part of any organisation for the smooth functioning of Organisation and same is here in Indian Navy. One thing to note is that I Am using Indian every time before Navy is just because only Navy word is can create confusion in your mind as Merchant Navy is also a lucrative career for which I will write another blog.

A career as an Officer in Indian Navy:-

Officers in Indian Navy joined in two different Commission: Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission

Permanent Commission

It is one in which an officer has to serve for at least 20 years minimum and then after 20 years of service, an Officer is eligible for Full Pension + CSD canteen Facilities + Medical Facilities for self and dependent life long.

Short Service Commission

It is one in which Initial engagement for an Officer to serve is for 10 years and that can be further extended up to 4 years (after approval from authority only). That means up to 14 years one can serve because, after 15 years of service, an Officer is liable to get the Half pension. So to keep Forces, young in age, the concept of SSC is introduced in Armed Forces. Entry into the Indian Navy is possible by three methods:
⇛UPSC
⇛UES (University Entry Scheme)
⇛NCC Entry

UPSC entry (Only for Permanent Commission):- 

Union Public Service Commission conducts the exam for recruitment of Officer in Permanent Commission twice a year in three modes:-
⇒It conducts NDA (National Defence Academy)/ INA(Indian Naval Academy) on 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Math basis for students who are studying in 12th. After written test candidates are called for SSB (Service Selection Board) followed by the Medical Board. Candidates who have cleared the exam join NDA at Khadakwasla near Pune for Basic Course. Allotment of service to each candidate depends on their choices filled in UPSC Form and marks at NDA. After passing out from NDA, each candidate will go to respective Forces Academies.
⇒It conducts CDS (Combined Defence Services) Exam for graduate students. The candidate after clearing the exam got allotted with the Service in the same pattern as in NDA than proceeds to respective Academy to join for basic orientation training of Officers.
⇒NCC  Entry is there in which no exam is conducted but direct SSB is there followed by Medical. Than Candidate join to Indian Naval Academy.
As for Permanent Commission to date, women are not allowed for this entry. Citizens of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet Refugees are allowed.

Non-UPSC Entry (Direct Entry for Permanent and Short Service Commission)

Here in this scheme, no written is conducted and direct SSB is held followed by the Medical Board. Candidates are shortlisted based on their Qualifications and Merit.
⇒Technical Cadet Entry in which Candidates are shortlisted based on marks in 10+2 with PCM, and then SSB and Medical. After clearing all the phases, they are sent to INS Shivaji/ CUSAT Cochin for 4 years B.Tech degree and after that, they serve in Engineering Branch.
⇒UES (University Entry Scheme) in which candidates are shortlisted from various AICTE approved engineering colleges in the final year and then called for SSB + Medical board and if cleared than sent to Academy for orientation course and then serves in Engineering branch of Indian Navy.
⇒Special Naval Architect Scheme in this scheme,  campus interviews are conducted among the students of a prestigious institution like IIT who are in the Naval Architecture branch. After this Fitness test of candidates checked and then sent to the academy.

Fields in which Naval Officers use to perform

✅General science As an Executive (General Service) Officer, you will be managing all the jobs related to administrative processes onboard ships. Executive officers are leaders of men and will be a vital part of managing the ship and also in preparing the Ship for tactical warfare. So to win the war game you must know the strength and weakness of the ship and men under your command. This is the only reason that only Executive Officers made to command the ships. 
Training Selected Candidates through UES/CDS/NDA undergoes 44 weeks Naval Orientation Course at the Naval Academy, Ezhimala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships.
Qualification for the same discipline to join as Officer is BE/B.Tech (Any discipline).

✅Hydrological officer

Under this domain, officers use to Chart coral reefs, pristine waters, atolls and ports and You will be flying, diving and sailing into national and international uncharted waters. The qualification as a Hydrographer has international recognition. The Hydrographic Officer operates from highly sophisticated platforms to conduct surveys at sea, involved in producing navigation charts that are of international standards and are used by mariners across the world.
Training Candidates selected will undergo 44 weeks Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships especially at Hydrography School at Goa.
Qualification to become Hydrographer is BE/B.Tech (Any discipline)

✅Pilot in Indian Navy

It is like a golden opportunity for the young generation who want to fly high over the Oceans while operating onboard Ships as large moving Runway. Indian Navy has Naval Air Arm equipped with most sophisticated and advanced fighter jets, Aircraft, Helicopters to add strength. Your job as a Pilot will be to search, locate and hunt down if any enemy encroaching our waters. Along with operating from Onboard Ships, Navy has many offshore bases from where Training activities and maritime reconnaissance tasks being carried out.
Training Candidate after selection joins Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala for Orientation Course which is followed by Stage I and Stage II flying training at the Air Force Academy/Naval Establishment /Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Udaan Academy (IGRUA).’.
Qualification BE/B.Tech degree in any discipline with Physics & Maths in 12th standard. A candidate holding valid and current CPL issued by DGCA (India)(optional).

✅An observer in the Indian Navy
It is for those who want to take part in tactical moves onboard Aircraft at high seas with the aspiration to be a part of the Air arm of the Indian Navy. Being an Observer, you are supposed to have in-depth knowledge about the highly advanced technology of SONAR, RADAR, etc and how to operate on the equipment to search for any suspicious movements under and over the sea by the enemy. You will also be responsible for firing weapons, as and when the situation demands. As an Observer, you will be flying onboard Helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft of the Indian Navy.
Training Candidate after selection joins Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala for Orientation Course for a duration of 22 weeks and after completion, of course, they are sent to Observer School in Kochi for Professional training. On successful completion of training at Observer School, the candidates will be awarded the prestigious “Observer Wings”.
Qualification BE/B.Tech degree in any discipline with Physics & Maths in 12th standard.

✅Logistic Officer in Indian Navy

As a Logistics Officer, you will be involved in Budgeting, Managing, and overall coordination with other agencies for Inventory management and spare parts used for continued servicing of ships. You will be also managing the Clothing and Ration part for lower ranks which is a major chunk in boosting the morale of the force. You will be responsible for the smooth processing of inventory stores and their management as well.
Training Candidate after selection, joins Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala for Orientation Course and then sent to Mumbai for their Professional training.
Qualification BE/B Tech in any discipline with 1st class or MBA with 1st class or
B Sc/B Com/B Sc(IT) with 1st class and PG Diploma in finance/Logistics/Supply Chain Mgt/Material Mgt or MCA/M Sc(IT) with 1st class, For Works BE/B Tech(Civil)/B Architect.

✅NAIC

Naval Armament Inspection (NAI) Officers are the specialist officers responsible for Inspection & Quality Assurance (QA), in-house R&D, life extension and life assessment to ensure safety, serviceability and functional reliability of Armaments in the inventory of Indian Navy. As a Naval Armament Inspection officer, you will be responsible for inspection of the armament supplied to the Navy by various agencies. You will also be responsible for in-house Research & Development, leading to indigenization and will have to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of Naval Armament and Stores procured by the Navy.  NAI officers also provide QA coverage during production/ acceptance at various Ordnance factories, PSUs, Private Industry and at foreign OEM premises. The NAI officers associate with various DRDO labs during the development phase of various armament stores.
Training Candidates selected will undergo 44 weeks Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships.
Qualification The candidates must possess at least 60% marks in BE/B. Tech Degree from a recognized university in any one of the streams like Mechanical, Civil, Aeronautical, Metallurgy, Naval Architecture.

✅IT Officer in Indian Navy

Indian Navy gives you an opportunity to serve the Country being an IT graduate in your parent field, where you will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of IT infrastructure and its advanced applications into the Naval Domain. You will post onboard Ships as well as offshore units to explore your skills.
Training Candidates selected will undergo 44 weeks Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships.
Qualification The candidates must possess at least 60% marks in one of the following:-
BE/B.Tech (Computer Science/ Computer Engineering/IT), B.Sc (IT), M.Tech (Computer Science), M.Sc (Computer), MCA.

✅Air Traffic Control Officer in Indian navy

As the Indian Navy contains its large Air fleet and operates both from ships as well as from establishments. Air Traffic Control is like Oxygen to them, and provides precise information and help in Landing and Take Off. As an ATC Officer, you will be posted on Ships/Establishments to guide the Air Fleet.
Training Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships.
Qualification BE/B.Tech degree in any discipline with Physics & Maths in 12th standard.

✅Law Officer in Indian Navy

  Indian Navy is equipped with its own legal arm and the Judge Advocate General (JAG) is that one. A Judge Advocate is appointed under Section 168 of the Navy Act, 1957 and is deemed to be a Judicial Officer. The primary role of a JAG officer is to deliver independent,operationally-focused, solution-oriented legal advice and services across the full spectrum of naval law towards supporting naval operations and a sound naval administration. The primary duty of the officer in the Dept. Of JAG(Navy) is to attend Courts-Martial as Trial Judge Advocate wherein he decides all questions of law arising in the course of the trial. An officer in this Department is expected to render advice and assistance to ships/establishments/units of the Indian Navy in dealing with disciplinary matters, monitoring court cases and also in pursuing litigation in various courts at various levels. 
Training Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships.
Qualifications Candidates should possess a degree in Law qualifying them for enrolment as advocates under the Advocates Act, 1961.

✅Engineering Officer in Indian Navy

Being a graduate in Engineering gives you an opportunity to serve the nation within your specialized field. As an Engineer Officer, you are required to operate and maintain the Marine Engineering equipment onboard ships/submarines/aircraft. Additionally, you have enough opportunity to enhance your skills in Repair Yards which are responsible for Repair of Ships and its associated equipment onboard.
Training Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships.
Qualification The candidates must possess at least 60% marks in BE/B Tech Degree from a recognized university in one of the streams like Marine, Mechanical, Aeronautical, Production, Metallurgy Control or Any other allied discipline.

✅Electrical Officer in Indian navy

As an Electrical Officer, you will be tasked with the role of maintaining the combat readiness of sophisticated Missile Systems, underwater systems, long-range sensors, and advanced combat management system. Additionally, You will be responsible for running large power distribution networks using advanced computer-based power management systems. Also, exposure to work in Repair Yards gives tremendous opportunity to enhance skills.
Training Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment /Units/Ships.
Qualification The candidates must possess at least 60% marks in BE/B Tech Degree from a recognized university in one of the streams like Electrical, Electronics, TeleCommunication, Any other allied discipline.

✅Medical Officer in Indian Navy

If you want to join the Medical wing of the Armed Forces than Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) is one of the finest options available to a medical graduate in our country. As a doctor, you will get an opportunity to learn and practice military medicine and look after the health of the men in uniform and their families both during peace and war. Indian Navy has many Hospitals among them main is INHS ASHWINI at Mumbai which is equipped with world-class facilities
Training Candidates are selected based on the exam conducted by AFMC Pune to induct into the Medical branch and followed by Study at AFMC Pune. After completion of training, you will be inducted as Sub Lieutenant.
Qualification
AFMC Cadet Entry (MBBS Course after which commission is granted in AMC) Age Requirement is 17-22 Years. 10+2 with PCB securing not less than 60% of aggregate marks together and not less than 50% in any of these subjects.
